AKC Dad's Blackberry Surprise
Meet Bear. She is a 3 year old AKC Alaskan Malamute. She has a wooly coat in gray & white and weighs in at about 140# right now with a couple of weeks to go in her pregnancy. Her puppies are due on or about Christmas Day! She is really good natured, mellow, and sweet. She really is a gentle giant! She prefers naps on the couch, lots of treats, and short little walks. She's very quiet and happy!

Puppies will probably be gray & white, or possibly sable & white in color. We expect some smooth and some woolies. These pups should grow to be very big, Mom and Dad are both 125-pounders. We are taking deposits on these puppies now.

BUYING A PUPPY:  Deposit to hold a puppy for you is 50% of puppy price - NONREFUNDABLE. Prices for the puppies are listed on the Puppy page. The pups will be AKC registered with Limited Registration. (No breeding rights will be sold, no chance, don't ask.)These pups are for pets, loving companions or working companions only.  Puppies will not be reserved until deposit is received and cleared our bank, and/or at our discretion. Puppies will not be released until paid in full.  Puppies will be ready for their forever homes at the end of February when they are 8 weeks old and will have had vet checks and first puppy shots.

******UPDATE 12/22/10*********** Bear had an x-ray yesterday but it was very hard for the vet to read. he wasn't completely positive as to how many puppies are in there, but he is sure it is a small batch of puppies. He said it may possibly be only one puppy! Can't believe that, she's gotten pretty big, has gained 19 pounds for only one puppy!?!?! No way! But he said she is such a large dog with such a big abdomen, that the machine he used probably didn't give a good picture. But anyway, she's doing very well. She weighed 144 pounds and still has a few more days to go... Will post more when I know more!
**************12/30/10 ~ Just an observation-  I think my vet needs a new x-ray machine!!!!*******************

*****UPDATE 12/27/2010**************** Still no puppies!!! Today is actually the 61st day of gestation, so we are still within the normal limits. I took her temperature this morning and it is a degree lower this a.m. though, which the vet says is usually an indicator that something could happen within 24 hours... We'll see... still anxiously awaiting...

****UPDATE 12/29/10******************8 puppies have arrived! 6 males and 2 females.

*******12/30/10**************One more puppy has arrived (happily and unexpectedly!) during the night last night! He is strong and hungry!!

Dad and Mom (Moose and Bear) ~ the happy couple!

Here's Daddy Moose!

Picture
AKC Alaskan Malamute Mom's Minnkota Moose on the Loose - aka just Moose. Sometimes known as Houdini for his amazing creativity at breaking out of his kennel. He's roughly 125# with a smooth coat that's registered as Sable & White, but looks very close to the same coloring as Bear's gray & white... He's very energetic, happy, healthy,  and extremely strong. He is very vocal, even when he was a puppy.  He loves running, swimming, and playing tag with smaller creatures (like chipmunks, squirrels, cats, Pekinese...)

He loves the water!

A Little More About the Malamute Breed:

Picture
Most of everything I've read about Alaskan Malamutes I would be in agreement with. We have found them to be wonderful with children, always staying very close, sometimes too close for a child who doesn't like slobbery kisses. They love attention and will push their way to the front to get it!

They are NOT very good with smaller pets like cats and little breed dogs. These big dogs are very strong and can easily hurt (even by accident) the smaller creatures, including your kids.

They are escape artists, going over, under, and even through kennels. Bending gates and chewing through chain link!  It's amazing. Even jumping right through screens.

We also agree with popular opinion that these dogs are best suited for country homes. Neighbors don't like Malamutes! They're sometimes noisy with their "woo-wooing" and even howling occasionally. They don't bark a whole lot, but they will let you know when the UPS guy shows up, and they will let him know that they know he's there as well.

The biggest disagreement I have with what I've read and experienced with this breed, is that they aren't suited for warm climates. They love cool weather. Our dogs seem very lazy in the summer, but have been seen sprawled out atop snow banks, PANTING,  in January at -20 degrees! They love the cold and snow of Minnesota. There is a good reason these are named Alaskan Malamutes and not Texas Malamutes!
